If you’ve driven from L.A. to Vegas (or back) since last May you may have wondered what the wildly colorful rock stacks are.
These painted rocks are an art instillation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, named the Seven Magic Mountains. The seven totems range from 30 to 35 feet high and are made up of locally-sourced limestone boulders.
The bright colors of these rocks stand out quite vibrantly against the neutral desert backdrop and distant mountain ranges. Rondinone’s work is meant to balance the natural and artificial.
“Seven Magic Mountains elicits continuities and solidarities between human and nature I artificial and natural, then and now. What centers this amalgam of contradictions is the spiritual aspiration, one that bruises, elevates and transcends.” – Ugo Rondinone
Have you gone to visit this amazing piece of art? Let me know what you think in the comments. If you want to plan a visit, make sure its sooner rather than later. The instillation will be removed May 2018.
